Our Story

In June 2019, The Curve Collective was born out of a desire to thrift more and a mission to fill a glaring void for plus size bodies keen to do the same. Inspired by the thriving thrifting and reselling community on Instagram, I eagerly browsed the online accounts in a bid to shop sustainably. But as I delved into the world of pre-loved fashion, it became evident that plus size options were woefully underrepresented, with many resellers shying away from sizes above 16-18.

Determined to change the narrative and offer a solution, The Curve Collective Instagram page emerged as a platform to showcase and resell unique plus-size thrifted finds. The response was overwhelming and swift - there were lots of people struggling to find plus size threads just like me! The sense of support and connection in those early days laid the foundation for what would become a vibrant and inclusive community.

Venturing beyond the digital realm, I took The Curve Collective to markets, finding a tangible space for face-to-face interactions. The name "Collective" rang true as I started feeling part of a growing community around fat acceptance and liberation. People would often come over and breathe a sigh of relief as they would say “finally, a stall with clothes that fit me!”. The enthusiastic reception of a stall that truly catered to diverse sizes fueled a vision – what if every market stall could elicit that sense of relief and inclusivity?

This question birthed The Plus Size Market, where thrifted fashion and secondhand style were accessible and enjoyable for every body, from small-fats and mid-size individuals to superfats. The market became a celebration of plus-size fashion, focusing on accessibility and fostering an environment where people felt beautiful and celebrated, regardless of their shape or size.

Today, we've evolved beyond online sales, and instead are growing this community and hosting inclusive events. The Plus Size Market has become an annual tradition, now in its fourth successful year, and we've expanded our horizons with events like The Fat Babe Pool Party. Our journey continues as we strive to create safe, inclusive spaces for plus size individuals and fat folk, celebrating beauty in all its diverse forms. Kia ora, I'm Tayla Taylor! Leo, queer, and a proud foodie with a passion for community, fashion, pink hues, and colourful earrings. When I'm not going for a swim or singing karaoke, you'll find me getting my nails done or working on my passion projects at the kitchen table.

I’m also the driving force behind The Curve Collective. Frustrated by the lack of plus size options in second-hand markets, I embarked on a mission to redefine the landscape. The overwhelming response to a stall that catered to diverse sizes fueled the creation of The Plus Size Market – a space for the plus size community to access affordable thrifted clothes and feel celebrated.

Beyond The Curve Collective, I'm a full-time Youth Worker, championing the voices of care-experienced tamariki. I lead projects at Leadership Lab with a focus on flipping power dynamics and amplifying marginalized voices. I enjoy coaching strengths, running events, and bringing people together to build community.
